Bromfords School makes history in Basildon’s Twin Town in Germany.
Last weekend 25 students and teachers from Bromfords School in Wickford travelled to Basildon’s Twin Town, Heiligenhaus, Germany to take part in a Handball Tournament.
Forty-seven years ago a discussion took place in Germany about the possibility of a tour by a British Team from Basildon. Finally it has happened and history was made!
The school took three teams to take part in a tournament with the local Velbert/Heiligenhaus club in preparation for the English Schools Championships in a few weeks time.
There were two days of expert coaching with the students and the local trainers who put the players through their paces and provided some skills training as well as match tactics.
On Saturday the teams took part in a tournament. There were U15 girls and boys teams as well as an U18 boys team. Competition was of a high quality as the Germans play regularly in local leagues. The girls and U18 boys were defeated by the vastly experienced sides from the local area but the U15 boys from Bromfords were victorious and pleased with their games management.
The experience was greatly enjoyed by all concerned and invaluable for the development for the game. Michael Nink, Club organiser in Heiligenhaus, praised all the students ” The English students were responsive, extremely well behaved and a credit to their school and town. They were prepared to listen attentively to all the trainers and we wish them well in their handball championships. It would be great to have them back and perhaps even we could come to Basildon next year.”
A spokesman for Basildon Borough Twinning, who recieve a grant from Basildon Borough Council as part of the Community Twinning scheme, also went along to volunteer and make sure everything went smoothly between the Twin Towns. Volunteers from the Twinning group, who self-fund themselves, said it was a pleasure to see how well the students from Bromfords and the local students from Heiligenhaus got along with each other. They were a credit to Basildon Town.
